Help/Usage for Scum: the Masquerade Dealer Website
This service is provided for the enjoyment of
Scum: the Masquerade players who wish to arrange
and play a game on-line. Although we have taken care,
there is no guarantee that the site will work correctly.

How to use the S:tM Dealer --
This site is intended to be used in conjunction with a separate
chat service or other group communication capability. This site serves
as a dealer only. All game play takes place in the chat session.
In other words, the purpose of this site is to enable you to play
S:tM in an on-line chat room, without needing an extra person on hand
to shuffle and deal the cards and then let each player know which
cards are in his or her crypt.
All of the dealing takes place on a single web page, but the content
of the page changes depending on the situation.
- When no dealing is underway, the "start" page is displayed.
This page allows a user to specify the number of players
(and the number of decks for six players). One person
(usually the new Scum) does this and then clicks 'Deal'.
- After someone has clicked 'Deal', the cards are shuffled and
the "gimme" page is displayed. This page has one or two buttons
showing the number of cards in a crypt. For example, in a
five-person game, there are two extra cards, so the buttons read
'Give me a 10-card crypt' and 'Give me a 11-card crypt'.
Normally, the Justicar, using the chat session, designates which
players are to take the 11-card crypts. (However, once all the
crypts of a given size have been taken, the Dealer will deliver
only the remaining size, no matter which button was used.)
Each player should access the "gimme" page and click the
appropriate button.
- When each player clicks a 'Give me...' button, the player's
personal crypt is displayed. Each player gets a different
crypt, and the Dealer stops delivering crypts (returns to
displaying the "start" page) after all crypts for this round
have been taken. Important: Be sure to make a record
of the cards in your crypt if there is any chance that you
will leave the web page displaying your crypt. It will not
be possible to recover exactly the same set of cards by
returning to the page. In fact, if you do return to
the "crypt" page after leaving it and before all other players
have taken their crypts, you will take another crypt, and
some player will be left out. If this should happen, the
best solution is to declare (in the chat session) the deal void,
and start over.
- After all players have taken their crypts, the Dealer returns
to the "start" page and waits for someone to deal a new round.
If, for some reason, someone fails to take their crypt, the deal
will time out after a while (currently three minutes) and a
"time out" page is displayed. Again the solution is to declare
the deal void and start over.
Note: At present, there is no provision for multiple, concurrent deals.
If multiple groups want to play at the same time, they will have to wait
for each other to complete their deals. Hopefully, a new group will recognize
that another group's deal is underway because they will get a "gimme" page
instead of a "start" page when the first player logs in. If this happens
to you, just refresh the page periodically until you get a "start" page,
then begin your deal (while the other group is playing). There is no way
for you to know who the other group is, or how to reach their chat session.
Give us feedback if this causes any confusion; we'll try to develop a solution.
